What Can I Expect During Liposuction?

Liposuction techniques vary based on the tools and methods used for fat removal. At H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery, we utilize several advanced techniques to achieve optimal results.

  • Tumescent Liposuction: A small incision, less than a quarter inch, is made in a discreet area. We inject a solution of diluted lidocaine and adrenaline to minimize bleeding and numb the area. A cannula is inserted, and power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is used to move the cannula back and forth, offering precise control.
  • Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL): For denser fat, we use a titanium cannula to deliver ultrasonic energy to emulsify the fat before removal with power-assisted techniques.
  • Syringe Liposuction: Ideal for small areas, this minimally invasive technique involves using a syringe to create suction and remove fat cells with minimal blood loss and quick healing.

What Can Liposuction Do for Me?

While surgical fat removal is not a weight loss procedure or a cure for obesity, it can result in a fairly substantial amount of weight loss. The result is a slimmer, smoother contour on your body without that stubborn fat. Our patients have shared with us that they have reduced by four to eight sizes or even more!

Areas that are commonly treated include the neck, chest area in men, arms, abdomen/tummy, love handles, back, buttocks, thighs, knees, and calves. Tumescent liposuction of the entire abdomen and back – a circumferential treatment of the trunk – can offer a fantastic improvement of the shape and contour of your body.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Liposuction?

Your recovery period will depend on the extent of your procedure, but most patients can return to most normal activities within two weeks. In some cases, drains are used to collect fluid for the first week after your surgery. The drains may be annoying, but they speed the resolution of swelling.

You can expect some bruising, inflammation, and soreness after liposuction, but you can take pain medication to ease any discomfort you feel. You will also have follow-up appointments with your surgeon to ensure that you are healing properly.

Liposuction FAQS

After liposuction, avoid strenuous activities and exercise for at least 4-6 weeks to ensure proper healing. Refrain from smoking and alcohol consumption, as they can impair recovery and increase complications. Protect the treated areas from direct sun exposure and avoid submerging them in water, such as baths or swimming, until your surgeon gives approval. Consistently wear compression garments as directed to reduce swelling and support the healing process.

Liposuction results are generally long-lasting, provided you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. The fat cells removed during the procedure do not regenerate, but remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight. To ensure the longevity of your results, it’s important to follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and avoid significant weight fluctuations. Regular follow-ups with your surgeon can help monitor and maintain your results over time.

Liposuction does not cause fat to grow in other locations, but it can change the way your body stores fat. Since the fat cells in the treated areas are permanently removed, if you gain weight after the procedure, the fat may be distributed to other parts of your body where fat cells remain. This can sometimes make other areas appear fuller than before. Maintaining a stable weight through a healthy diet and regular exercise can help preserve the results of your liposuction and prevent significant changes in fat distribution.

Liposuction is generally associated with moderate pain and discomfort, particularly in the initial days following the procedure. Most patients describe the pain as a deep soreness or bruising sensation. Pain is typically managed with prescribed pain medications and gradually diminishes over the first week or two. Swelling and tenderness may persist for a few weeks to months, but these symptoms decrease as the body heals. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to help manage pain and ensure a smooth recovery.

After liposuction, it’s important to sleep in a position that minimizes pressure on the treated areas to aid healing and reduce swelling. Generally, sleeping on your back with your head and upper body slightly elevated is recommended. Using extra pillows or a wedge pillow can help achieve this elevated position, which also aids in reducing fluid buildup. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or sides if these positions put pressure on the areas that underwent liposuction. Always follow your surgeon’s specific advice regarding sleeping positions to ensure optimal recovery.

Liposuction and a tummy tuck are both body contouring procedures, but they address different concerns. Liposuction focuses on removing localized fat deposits to improve body contours and can be performed on various body parts, including the abdomen, thighs, and hips. In contrast, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the underlying abdominal muscles, addressing both sagging skin and muscle laxity. Liposuction is less invasive with a shorter recovery time, while a tummy tuck is a more extensive surgery with a longer recovery period and is typically recommended for patients with significant skin laxity and muscle separation.

Recovery from SmartLipo is generally quicker than that of traditional liposuction. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days to a week. Some swelling and bruising are normal but should subside quickly.

SmartLipo is a great option for individuals with localized fat deposits and mild to moderate skin laxity. To determine if SmartLipo is the right treatment for you, schedule a consultation with our specialists.
