Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty surgery is as much an art as it is a science. Achieving facial balance is a primary goal, and one of our skilled plastic surgeons will carefully consider the relationship between your nose and other facial features to create a harmonious, natural-looking result. Factors like skin thickness, bone structure, and nasal function all play a role in determining the best approach for your unique anatomy. Whether you’re seeking subtle refinement or more dramatic changes, a personalized approach ensures that your results look balanced and complement your individual features, helping you achieve greater confidence and satisfaction with your appearance.

Rhinoplasty nose surgery is a very popular procedure at H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery with an extremely high patient satisfaction rating. This procedure utilizes techniques, such as cartilage removal, nasal bone manipulation, and/or nasal tip shaping, to help patients achieve a look that they’re proud of.

Rhinoplasty surgery is designed to improve the appearance of the nose and, in some cases, to improve nasal function by addressing breathing problems such as nasal airflow issues or difficulties during sleep and exercise. It can help bring the overall facial structures into better harmony and balance or simply modify areas of the nose that are misshapen or too large. With rhinoplasty surgery, two main techniques, closed and open rhinoplasty, are typically utilized, but most commonly, the open technique is used so that the surgeon can have optimal versatility to achieve a great result. Our surgeons personalize each rhinoplasty procedure to the patient’s unique anatomy and goals.

What to Expect?

Rhinoplasty surgery focuses on reshaping the underlying structures of the nose, including cartilage, bone, and soft tissue. Depending on your goals, this may involve smoothing a dorsal hump, refining the nasal tip, narrowing the bridge, or correcting asymmetry. In some cases, rhinoplasty can also improve breathing by addressing structural issues such as a deviated septum. Your surgeon will evaluate your facial proportions and nasal anatomy to determine whether an open or closed rhinoplasty technique is best suited to achieve your desired outcome.

Recovery Time

During the recovery period after rhinoplasty nose surgery, bruising and swelling usually occur, as well as nasal congestion (a stuffy nose). Minor bruising is common and usually resolves within a few weeks. While this can be slightly uncomfortable, most patients are surprised by how quickly it begins to heal after a few days. To minimize swelling and promote healing, it is important to keep your head elevated during the initial recovery period.

Rhinoplasty patients are often quite surprised at the low level of pain and discomfort they feel. For most patients, rhinoplasty is not a very painful procedure to experience. Residual swelling can persist for several months and may take up to a year to fully resolve.

Follow-up visits vary depending on the complexity of your procedure and the preferences of the surgeon, but typically range from two to eight visits over the course of a few weeks. Most patients return to work after the nasal cast is removed, typically within a week.

Resuming exercise will be determined by your surgeon and based on the complexity of your procedure. However, in most cases, patients can resume most physical activities within a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

We ask that patients take it easy for the first week. Patients have a cast on the nose, and potentially splints on the inside of the nose for the first week. These are typically removed one week postoperatively. Ease back into normal exercise after two weeks postoperatively.

We use digital imaging to demonstrate to patients what is a reasonable expectation of the appearance of the nose postoperatively. While it is certainly never a guarantee of results, it is a useful tool to discuss goals of surgery and to achieve a mutual goal of a beautiful and harmonious nose..

Revision rhinoplasty is more challenging than primary rhinoplasty for a variety of factors. There is additional scarring to contend with during surgery and the postoperative period. Often, there is deformity or lack of the existing cartilages in the nose, thus requiring additional cartilage sources for reconstruction. There is increased risk of asymmetries as well as tissue loss with revision cases.

No, we do not use nasal packing as was classically used in the past. We do use splints inside the nose that are typically in place for a week after surgery. Splints do not fully obstruct the nose, but can make breathing more difficult during that first week.

Open and closed rhinoplasty describe the ways we access the structures to the nose. Open approach will make use of a columellar incision as well as incisions inside the nose. Closed approach will use only incisions inside the nose.

Physical examination of the nose is vital in determining if you have a deviated septum. In many instances, septoplasty is performed to help correct the deviated septum. Often, the septoplasty is performed to harvest septal cartilage that is used during rhinoplasty. Septal cartilage is a very useful cartilage grafting material during rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is often a reconstructive surgery, where the structures of the nose are altered to improve its appearance. In addition, there are many maneuvers that can be performed to improve the nasal valve and airway by changing the nose’s structure.

It is normal to have some discomfort after rhinoplasty. You often have splints and cast in place, as well as sutures, which can all cause discomfort during the initial healing phase. There can be some tenderness and soreness of the nose and facial areas after rhinoplasty. However, pain medication is provided and often helps with alleviating pain. Often, patients are surprised by how little pain there is after surgery. In all cases, any pain significantly improves over the first few days, and is greatly reduced after the first week.

Yes! All noses have their own distinct features. Even after performing surgery, you will still have a nose unique to yourself. No nose is perfect, and no two noses are alike.

Walking is recommended after surgery. Ease back into normal exercise after two weeks postoperatively. The risk of bleeding in the nose is most present after surgery for the first 1-2 weeks. Keeping blood pressure down, and keeping physical exertion limited is advised to avoid any postoperative bleeding.

In general, after 1 week the cast and sutures are removed. Many patients are comfortable returning to work at that time, depending on the nature of the work. Some prefer to take a bit more time prior to returning to work.

A consultation with a qualified provider can help determine whether Rhinoplasty aligns with your goals, anatomy, and overall health. Ideal candidates are typically individuals seeking targeted aesthetic improvement and realistic results.

Our preop department requires that patients quit smoking tobacco and nicotine products weeks prior to and weeks after surgery. Smoking causes prolonged healing and potentially worsened scarring.

There are risks inherent to any surgery. Some of the more commonly discussed risks for rhinoplasty include: Hematoma. Septal perforation. Infection. Scarring. Asymmetries. Numbness. Prolonged swelling.

During consultation, we will discuss all of your concerns and goals to determine what is the best plan.. Think about which areas and aspects you hope to address in your nose during your consultation.

You will have a cast on your nose, splints possibly on the inside of the nose, and perhaps some sutures at the columella and inside your nostrils. You will have swelling, and some level of bruising can be expected. Nasal congestion is common immediately after rhinoplasty surgery.

General anesthesia is typically used during rhinoplasty. Modern general anesthesia is very safe. Use of general anesthesia helps protect your airway during surgery, which is very important.

The longevity of results from Rhinoplasty can vary depending on factors such as the technique used, lifestyle habits, and individual anatomy. Your provider can explain what to expect and how to maintain results during your consultation.
