The coolest part of what I do is seeing the transformation in patients. It’s why I became a plastic surgeon. I have a genuine belief that helping others reach their greatest self-esteem is the ultimate reward. Being a plastic surgery doctor is so much more than moulding the anatomy of the body – we have a unique opportunity to help them achieve something far deeper than physical. We’re moulding people’s self-esteem.

In addition to being a co-founder of H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Kortesis mentors medical students and residents from UNC and Wake Forest, and teaches fellows from the UNC Plastic Surgery Department. He also lectures at local, regional and national American Society of Plastic Surgeons meetings.

Dr. Kortesis’ passion for giving back has taken him on mission trips to Bolivia with the Partners of the Americas to aid pediatric burn victims. Dr. Kortesis is a competitive marathoner, half-marathon tri-athlete and adventure sports enthusiast who believes in the power of overall wellness. He and his wife are also active members of the Greek Church and enjoy sharing their time with the local Greek community.

Breast surgery is highly customized because every patient’s anatomy is different. No one is perfectly symmetrical, and some patients may have rib cage differences that require adjustments in implant size, volume, or projection. The goal is to tailor the surgical plan to each patient’s anatomy to create the most balanced and natural result possible.

Over time, larger breasts can begin to droop because size and weight place more stress on the surrounding tissue. Implant size and overall breast weight both play a role in how well the breast maintains its shape long term. In some cases, internal support such as mesh can help reinforce the tissue and provide additional stability to help reduce drooping.

For athletic patients considering breast surgery, returning to activity is an important part of the conversation. Many patients are able to resume light movement within a few days and gradually return to full activity in about three weeks, depending on the procedure and recovery. For those who use their pectoral muscles heavily, placing the implant above the muscle can help avoid disruption or potential displacement during intense activity.

In certain cases, internal mesh support can help maintain breast shape and provide added stability. It’s often helpful for patients with loose skin or implant malposition, allowing us to reposition the breast and support the tissue internally. The mesh acts as a scaffold to help maintain the shape and improve the long-term stability of the result.
