The coolest part of what I do is seeing the transformation in patients. It’s why I became a plastic surgeon. I have a genuine belief that helping others reach their greatest self-esteem is the ultimate reward. Being a plastic surgery doctor is so much more than moulding the anatomy of the body – we have a unique opportunity to help them achieve something far deeper than physical. We’re moulding people’s self-esteem.

In addition to being a co-founder of H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Kortesis mentors medical students and residents from UNC and Wake Forest, and teaches fellows from the UNC Plastic Surgery Department. He also lectures at local, regional and national American Society of Plastic Surgeons meetings.

Dr. Kortesis’ passion for giving back has taken him on mission trips to Bolivia with the Partners of the Americas to aid pediatric burn victims. Dr. Kortesis is a competitive marathoner, half-marathon tri-athlete and adventure sports enthusiast who believes in the power of overall wellness. He and his wife are also active members of the Greek Church and enjoy sharing their time with the local Greek community.

Choosing breast implant size is a highly individualized process. I take the time to understand each patient’s goals through detailed conversation, reference photos, and careful measurements, so their anatomy and vision align to determine the implant that fits them best.

If you’re planning to get pregnant, waiting for breast surgery can make sense. That said, many patients still choose to move forward sooner, and that can be completely appropriate.
The key is understanding that pregnancy changes the body. Breast shape, volume, and skin can all shift, and some concerns may need to be addressed again down the road. As long as expectations are clear, breast surgery can still be a thoughtful and reasonable choice.

Awake breast surgery can be a good option for patients who are comfortable remaining awake and able to tolerate the numbing process used during the procedure. With proper technique, the surgery can be well-controlled and comfortable without the need for general anesthesia.
As with any approach, patient selection is key. A thorough consultation helps determine whether awake surgery aligns with a patient’s comfort level, goals, and overall plan.

One of the most misunderstood parts of breast surgery is recovery. My goal as a surgeon is to help patients return to movement safely and efficiently, not keep them sidelined longer than necessary.
For many patients, that means walking early and gradually resuming light activity, including light weights and a stationary bike, within 7 to 10 days. Thoughtful surgical technique, proper planning, and guided recovery all play a role in helping the body heal while maintaining strength and confidence.
