What Can I Expect During Small Breast Augmentation?

Small breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure done under general anesthesia, and it often takes less than an hour.

We offer a wide variety of methods of small breast enlargement and incision placement, as well as  various FDA-approved implant shapes, available in both silicone and saline. The advanced techniques we employ allow us to create incisions in inconspicuous locations, such as the axillary (an incision in the apex of the armpit), the periareolar (an incision under the nipple at the areola where the color changes naturally), and the inframammary fold (under the crease of the breast).  We also use the TUBA technique in which the implants are inserted through an incision inside the navel.

Additionally, we  provide three options for the placement of your implants:

  • Sub-glandular – the implant is placed directly under the gland of the breast.
  • Sub-muscular – the implant is placed under the pectoralis major muscle.
  • Sub-facial – a newer technique in which the implant is placed below a thin, but strong layer of connective tissue that covers the pectoralis major muscle. With this method, you get the “internal bra” benefit of the sub-muscular technique without implant animation that can cause the implants to move when the muscles contract.

Small Breast Implant Brands At H/K/B

At H/K/B, we have had excellent success with Allergan, Mentor, Sientra, and now Motiva breast implantsand believe they are the best available on the market.

Allergan, Mentor, Sientra, and Motiva provide a variety of saline and silicone gel implants, including Sientra’s cohesive gummy bear implants known as 5th generation implants. They come in different shapes, textures, and sizes for height, profile, and projection.

Saline breast implants

Silicone polymer makes up the outer shell of saline implants, and the inner filling is a saline solution. One advantage of saline breast implants is that they require a shorter incision since the implant is filled with liquid after insertion into the breast. This also allows the surgeon to customize the size of the implants to a more precise degree. The FDA has approved saline breast implants for women aged 18 and over.

Additionally, in the rare instance of a rupture, you know immediately if your saline implants  have. The firmer structure of saline breast implants, while contributing to their durability, may not give the natural feel some women want from their implants and may also carry a slightly higher risk of rippling.

FDA-approved for women aged 22 and over, these breast implants are filled with silicone gel prior to insertion, which means they require a longer incision than saline implants.

Silicone breast implants have a soft, natural feel and are less prone to rippling or rupturing. Our surgeons can provide multiple placement options, depending on your preference. With silicone implants, you may  not be able to detect a ruptured implant as easily. Ruptures, while rare, are not necessarily harmful, but they can affect the shape of the implant and will require revision surgery.

The newest generation of cohesive gel implants in the United States, called gummy bear or 5th generation implants, are filled with a silicone substance that resembles a solid gelatin. Their “cohesive” designation comes from their ability to hold their shape regardless of your body’s position. Sientra’s full portfolio of 5th generation silicone breast implants are made with high-strength cohesive (HSC) silicone gel to ensure implant strength and integrity while still feeling like a natural part of your body. As another option, high strength cohesive plus (HSC+) gel breast implants retain their shape without feeling overly firm.

These 5th generation silicone gel implants are available  in round and teardrop shapes.HSC round implants offer a fuller appearance and more dramatic cleavage, while shaped implants create a more contoured, natural-looking silhouette. Each style combines the exclusive HSC silicone gel interior with a durable outer shell to create a soft, authentic feel without sacrificing the integrity of the implant.

You and your H/K/B board-certified plastic surgeon can decide together which shape will create a look that is right for you.

Textured Vs. Smooth Implants

Implant surfaces can be smooth or treated with a finishing process that texturizes the outer shell. It is important to understand that texture does not affect how your breasts feel — it simply helps the implant to adhere better to the surrounding breast tissue to avoid rotation. Implants with a smooth surface have a lower risk of rippling than textured implants. If a patient has less breast tissue, the risk for rippling increases, in which case we opt for the smooth implant.

Further, we have found that textured implants may be less prone to capsular contracture — a condition in which a tight scar develops around the implant, causing the breasts to become too firm and sometimes misshapen. Consequently, breast revision surgery must be done.

Our surgical team will work with you to determine which implant option will work best for you.

Small Breast Augmentation Recovery

Most of our patients can return to normal activities within a few days. However, lifting and vigorous exercise are restricted for a few weeks.

We will provide special instructions for recovery from small breast augmentation surgery. You can expect some tenderness and tightness. You may also experience bruising and swelling, but these conditions should subside quickly, leaving you with the beautiful breasts you have always wanted.

Small Breast Augmentation FAQS

Typically, small breast implants do not cost less than larger sizes. Our team will give you a detailed quote after your consultation.

The most important measurement we consider is the base diameter of your breast — how wide the breast is from the breastbone to the axillary line (or the imaginary line running vertically from your underarm down the length of your torso). The closer we stay to your  diameter, the more natural your result will look. Then, based on your desired size, we can select  a wider or narrower implant to achieve your goals. We also consider the size of your shoulders, abdomen, and hips to maintain your proportions.

We base sizing recommendations on the measurements of  the base diameter of the breast (or the distance from your breastbone to your axillary line). Then, depending on the size you want, we can adjust the profile of the implant to match that diameter. We work with the size of the shoulders, hips, and abdomen to create a well-proportioned result.

Smooth, round, silicone gel implants look and feel the most natural. Shaped implants tend to feel firmer and more structured/have a firmer, more structured feel.

Yes, you will have some cleavage. Cleavage amount  depends on the placement of the implants, and the style and projection of the implant.

In most cases, the position of the nipple complex determines the need for a breast lift.  A finger is placed in the fold under the breast and then transposed to the front of the breast to determine the proper position of the nipple complex. If it is 0”-1” the nipple, then a small uplift is needed ( i.e., just around the nipple complex). If it is greater than 1”, then a lollipop-type lift may be needed. The implant itself will lift the nipple complex to a degree as well.

It can be performed under sedation, Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) general anesthesia, or intubation general anesthesia. The choice depends on different anatomic factors affecting your mouth and neck region, and your overall health, as well as your comfort with the procedure.

Yes, we recommend that someone stays with you for the first night to help you navigate  possible residual effects of the anesthesia. We may also recommend arranging for someone to help with household tasks, especially if you care for young children or pets.

Yes. We place a bra on our patients at the time of surgery and recommend using one full-time/at all times when not in the shower for the first two weeks, and then as oftenas possible while upright.

Each individual recovers differently. Depending on the size of the implant, your body frame, and pocket placement, different activities may be started at different times. Generally speaking, we recommend waiting to run for approximately 2-3 weeks and waiting longer to resume upper body activities.

For a desk job, you can expect to be out approximately 5-7 days. If your job requires lifting or other strenuous activities, you may need to stay home for approximately 2 weeks.

Yes, you can still get mammograms after a small breast augmentation. Be sure to inform your technician that you have implants in place, which usually requires them to utilize an extra view.
